Experiences and apprehension from the life of a new father.
The effort to prepare our tax returns continues. Giovanna tries to help whenever I work on it.
She often sees me on my laptop or my desktop and eventually wants to use a computer herself. I have an old clamshell personal organizer that is just the right size for her. It has a 7" touch sensitive LCD screen and small keys. She normally calls, "pewter, pewter" when she wants to use it. I bring it down, put her into the drawing program and let her use the stylus to scribble.
Tonight she put away the stylus and grapped a scrap of paper sitting on the couch beside her. She held it up as if studying it, then set it down and started typing with her head hunched down.
She did this several times, valiantly repeating what she had seen me doing with all the store receipts.

Tonight we watched the movie "Roll Bounce" which takes place in 1978, mainly at a skating rink. The plot is about a big dance competition. It features many songs that were released that year.
Giovanna has taken quite a liking to music in general, but there are certain styles that really turn her on. Reggae will always get her to jump up and dance, as will anything with a strong beat behind it. Disco music also seems to give her energy.
Whenever a song started, she would scramble off the couch into the middle of the room and launch into her own dance mimicry of what was on screen. Often it involves bending her knees a little, pumping her bent arms back and forth at waist height and shaking her hips as she laughs.
Tonight she was really on her game. The moves blended with the music and stayed in synch with the actors on the screen. At a particularly dramatic moment, the main character ended up on his back spinning around in a break dance style. Sure enough, Giovanna was on her back, using her feet to spin her body around in a circle.
We laughed when the character in the movie (in a scene which took place before break dancing existed), finished his back spin with a flip into a position with his hands on the floor and a quick head stand with his skates helicoptering above him.
It was then that I saw Giovanna attempting to stand on her head! I rushed to intervene just as her feet were leaving the ground.
Hey, if they can do it, why can't I?

We invited our friends over for dinner and to let the kids play together. Fannie was busy cooking while I was making cards for Giovanna's 2nd birthday party before they arrived.
I didn't hear the little girl for a while -- a sure sign of trouble. I went into her bedroom to catch her in the middle of shaking an open baby powder bottle onto the floor. The white dust was all over her dark green shirt and even smudged on her face. There was a pile of baby wipes next to her that had been individually plucked from the box, emptying the entire container. And all her crayons were on the floor strewn across the carpet.
Unfortunately, it's the second time she's done this.
