Experiences and apprehension from the life of a new father.
Today when I came home from work, Giovanna appeared through the curtains in the window yelling, "Papa, Papa!" She does this every night when I come home; she starts watching for me when she hears the phone call that I'm on my way.
When I came in the door she ran to me and gave me a hug. She happened to find something in my pocket and called out "keys, keys!" She reached in and pulled them out with a big smile on her face. Then she looked up, held for a beat, and then asked, "money?"
The smile on my face faded away.

After work tonight, Giovanna and I went for a walk around the block. I pointed out birds, dogs and other animals to her as we strolled.
She enjoyed seeing everything, and would call out some of the animal names before I did. We came to some flowers. Long ago I taught her to literally stop and smell the roses. When we stopped to smell these, I heard a gentle buzzing sound. I noticed some bees in the flowers and pointed them out to Giovanna by saying, "look, bees."
She jumped back in horror. I was quite surprised, but quickly backed away from the flowers. When we got home I told the story to Fannie. "I don't know why she was so scared. I've never seen her look like that before."
"I taught her that. What were you doing trying to show her bees anyway?! She could die if one stings her -- we don't know if she's allergic yet! I can't trust you to even take the girl for a walk around the block!"
